Grace Lin Visits

I am happy to announce that award-winning author and illustrator
Grace Lin is coming to our school this Thursday, March 1st!!
Her Newbery Honor book, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, is our current One School, One Book choice here at Sexton. All of the teachers have been reading the book aloud to their students, and the PTA was gracious enough to purchase a copy for each family. I hope you have been enjoying this fabulous story at home!

OBOB Begins

Battle of the Books
The Oregon Battle of the Books is a statewide reading motivation and comprehension program. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence.
At Sexton Mountain, 145 4th and 5th graders are getting ready to participate in over 45 battles!  Each team will answer a series of questions based on 16 chosen books. Preliminary battles will be held from February 21-March 2 during Library Class time and then Final Battles will be given a special timeslot in the second week of March. A more precise schedule with pictures of each team is posted on the bulletin boards in the nonfiction section of the Library. All parents are welcome to attend and support their teams! The ultimate winning team will move on to Regional Battles at Sunset High School on March 17.
Good Luck to all participants!
